Process Breakdown

Project Role: Art Direction & Senior Motion Designer

Formats: 16×9 and 9×16, delivered as cutdowns for Instagram, YouTube, and sales presentation use

I was responsible for art direction and motion execution, guiding the project from early concept through final delivery while collaborating closely with the client, director, and editorial team.

The objective was to showcase a product line through an advertisement that seamlessly blended live-action footage with full CGI. The visual approach needed to feel cohesive across both mediums, presenting the products with clarity, realism, and a premium finish suitable for social, video, and sales contexts.

Working in close collaboration with the client, I helped define the visual direction and overall tone of the piece. I also partnered with the director during production to align the live-action footage with the intended CGI integration, ensuring continuity between on-set decisions and post-production execution.

On the 3D side, my responsibilities included preparing assets and environments for photorealistic rendering and motion. This work involved coordinating LiDAR scanning for accurate glove detail, developing materials from engineering files for the lacrosse head, and modeling and texturing the lacrosse shaft from the ground up. For final delivery, I organized and handed off 3D assets and render passes to an editor, supporting efficient assembly of cutdowns across formats.

Challenges & Solutions

Recreating the Live-Action Environment in 3D

A primary challenge was matching the on-set environment closely enough in 3D to allow for seamless integration between live-action footage and CGI elements. Any mismatch in scale, lighting, or material response would disrupt realism.

To address this, I recreated the environment digitally and leveraged Unreal Engine for real-time rendering and look development. This approach allowed for rapid iteration and precise alignment between physical and digital space, ensuring the CGI elements blended naturally into the live-action scenes.

Maintaining Consistency Across Formats and Cutdowns

With multiple cutdowns delivered across 16×9 and 9×16 formats, maintaining visual consistency and product focus was essential.

The motion system and framing were designed to adapt across aspect ratios, allowing the editor to create platform-specific versions without compromising hierarchy or clarity. This ensured the work remained cohesive whether viewed on Instagram, YouTube, or in sales meetings.

Result

The final deliverables present the product line through a flexible motion system that supports live-action integration, full CGI execution, and multi-format distribution. The project balances technical accuracy with polished visual storytelling, delivering assets suitable for both external marketing and internal sales use.

Behind the Scenes

This behind-the-scenes look in Unreal Engine showcases how I recreated the environment to match the live-action footage. I modeled the background lights, added a detailed turf field, and animated the lights to mimic real-world movement, ensuring seamless integration between CGI and live-action.

This is an early test render for look development, exploring lighting and highlighting techniques to refine the final visual style.
